INTERACTIVE SPATIAL SOUND DESIGN
Working alongside Melbourne initiative Terrain Projects, Acid Springfield crafted a living score for their cavernous environmental bookstore. Using a combination of ambient, fourth-world electronica tuned to the Schumann Resonances (Earth’s low-frequency hum), localized field recordings (such as native birds), and synthesized subterranean sounds all triggered by a custom-coded Max/MSP/Jitter patch, the soundtrack constantly shifts and changes concurrently with the exact outside temperature of TERRAINS location, and in response to visitors' movement inside the space, tracked through CCTV cameras.
By treating the space as an interactive ecosystem, this piece playfully invites visitors to heighten their spatial awareness by attuning to sonic surroundings, encouraging us to reflect on the connection between our bodies and the Earth.
More on the project here and here.
INTERACTIVE LAUNCH // Layered on top of our organic bedding, we composed synthetic sfx’s that represent humans’ impact on the environment. These sounds cluster and dissipate, changing in intensity depending
on the number of people and movement inside the store at a given time, resulting in each visitor leaving their unique imprint on the space. To launch the collaboration, we held an event where every visitor became part
of the sonic tapestry with their movements tracked by CCTV. We invited guests to play viewing their movements via projections all while they heard the sonic reactions echo around them.
